I spent many hours trying to upgrade the firmware of my PDR-M25 using the instructions from the Toshiba web site and failed miserably.

After reading the instructions for some of the other cameras, I experimented with changing the name of the firmware file and VOILA!  It worked.  I've pulled the instructions from the Toshiba web site and modified them with what I've found

This updated procedure worked for me.  Your experience may differ.

    PDR-M25 Firmware Upgrade

 

Firmware Upgrade using a Card Reader
The firmware upgrade process requires transferring the upgrade from the Smart Media Card to the camera. One method is to use a Card Reader. You may want to print out this page to use as a reference while you do the upgrade.

Caution: Before you Begin! :

  • FORMAT the Smart Media Card to insure that there are no files on the Card before you begin. If there are other files on the Smart Media Card, the upgrade may not be recognized.

  1. Download the upgrade file from the web site to your computer. PDR_M25.bin (NOTE: Toshiba has yanked the firmware update from their web site.  I have made the file available on my web site for use at your own risk.  This file worked for me in the past; however, I cannot guarantee that it will work on your camera or that it will not ruin your camera.  Again.  Use at your own risk!: PDR_M25.bin)

  2. Place the Smart Media Card into the Card Reader.

  3. Rename the firware upgrade file to fware64.bin and copy it from the computer to the Smart Media Card.

  4. Remove the Smart Media Card from the Reader and place it in the camera.
    VERY IMPORTANT: USE FRESH AA BATTERIES OR PREFERRED AC ADAPTER BEFORE STARTING UPDATE

  5. Wait for 30 seconds.

  6. Hold the POWER SWITCH on the camera for one second.
    (This will reset the Micro Processor in the camera).

  7. Connect the AC Adapter or install the NEW batteries. If old batteries are used and camera stops functioning during upgrade process, this will damage the camera. Toshiba will not accept responsibility for cameras damaged during firmware upgrade process.

  8. Camera will begin to BEEP (six times).
    While the camera is BEEPING, Press the SHUTTER BUTTON.

  9. A HIGH BEEP Sounds, then the Update begins.
    During the Update, the LED beside the Power Switch blink Orange, and the Timer LED blinks Red. These are indications that the update is in process.
    DO NOT INTERRUPT THE UPDATE PROCESS.
    It takes approximately 60 seconds to complete.

  10. When the update is complete, the camera will BEEP six times.

  11. Check the Firmware Version to insure that you have successfully installed the new Firmware Upgrade for your camera.

Congratulations, the camera upgrade is now complete. Now you can replace the battery and FORMAT the Smart Media Card for more pictures.

  1. Download the upgrade file from the web site to your computer. PDR_M25.bin.
