Birthdate estimated from this information. "John Groves[, son,] came to Perry County about 1811 with his father [, David Groves], who entered a large tract of land since known as Groves' Bottom." Source: "History of Warrick, Spencer, Perry Co. Indiana, from the earliest times to the present [1885]..." Chicago, Goodspeed, bros. & Co. 1885. WHITMER,Lloyd, ed. David Groves appears in both the 1820 and 1850 Perry County,Indiana Censi. The 1850 census lists both David GROVES (born in Pennsylvania) and his wife Mary Jane (born in Virginia) as residents of Samuel T.Groves' (34 years old, 3000, born in Indiana) household. David was 75 yearsold, and Mary Jane was 69 years old in 1850. Source: 1850 Perry County, Indiana Census, Page 406 dated 18-Sep-1850. The 1809 Tax list forHawkins Co. TN shows David Groves with 112 acres and 1 poll, while landrecords in Perry County Indiana show David Groves buying part of section 28 of Congressional Township 6 south Range 1 west in 1810. This would make1811the year that he moved his family to Indiana very likely. The family line from David Groves to Ally (Allen Hugh) Groves in this work isconfirmed by the "Genealogy of Groves Family," dated 1941, which is currently available at and currently physically located in the Louisville Free Public Library Reference number: GEN R929.2 G884G. The ancestral line in this 1941 book begins with a "Johan GROFF (Mennonite of Germany)." Although David GROVES' father was John GROFF/GROVE, this account of him coming directly from Germany cannot be verified and is not born out by the evidence provided here.
This John GROVE is the John GROVES of Hawkins County, Tennessee (ca 1730 Earl Township PA-1796 Hawkins COTN) that Vara Ross Boyatt in Maryville, TN has reasearch quite thoroughly. This would make the David GROVES of this work the same as Boyatt's"JG-1 David Grove - (Carter Valley land to D. Sensabaugh)," which Boyatt agrees with as she has used the research here as an correction to her JGline. The strongest evidence that David GROVES came to Perry Co. Indiana via Hawkins Co. TN is that in the 1850 Perry Co., Indiana census the birth place of David's oldest sons, John and Jacob, are listed as Tennessee. The date of birth from "The Groff Book" for David GROFF (E214) of ca. 1764 is incorrect and should be 1776, since the tombstone in Perry Co., IN indicates this later date. In a phone conversation with Boyatt, she stated that the date listed in her work was a "best guess", since her information on David was minimal. In an updated version of her John GROVE work, she has used the date of birth indicated by the Perry Co.tombstone.
This later birth date would make David the son of "m2 Elizabeth ____"and E21 John GROFF from "The Groff Book", since "m1 ANNA ____ ... d. between 1764 & 1771" died before David was born. The "Genealogy of Groves family" and the work of Joe B. Groves list "Elizabeth ____" as Elizabeth KLEPFERINE. 1820 GROVES DAVID Perry County IN 150 No Township Listed Federal Population Schedule IN 1820 Federal Census Index INS2a519304 1830 GROVES DAVID Perry County IN 312 Tobin Township Federal Population Schedule IN 1830 Federal Census Index IN560297451 1840 GROVES DAVID Perry County IN 199 No Township Listed Federal Population Schedule IN 1840 Federal Census Index INS4a1098561
